Education

Junior, Texas A & M University-Commerce - BS, Psychology (Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies) GPA: 3.460

Experience

SAT Composite: 2130 SAT Math: 680 SAT Reading: 680 SAT Writing: 770 AP Biology: 4 AP English Lit/Comp: 4 AP English Lang/Comp: 4 AP Calculus AB: 3 Courses Taken (University Level): -Calculus I, II, III -General Chemistry I, II Experience: I've had quite a bit of experience with helping those around me with course work. As a child and teenager, I understood the ideas I learned in class very easily, so often fellow students sought me out to learn the material away from the scrutiny of our teachers. But what kept them coming back was not the ease with which I understood concepts, but the effectiveness and clarity of my descriptions, as well as my patience and personability. Every person has their own unique learning style and no amount of rigidity and dedication to a specific teaching method will change that if the two don't align; because I believe this, I'm able to adapt my personal styles to communicate with a myriad of personalities. It's my belief that the best thing any tutor can possibly be is patient, understanding, warm, and inviting; these are some of my greatest strengths, and they've benefited many of my peers. Each person I've tutored has shown gratitude and even relief because I come in with the desire to discuss the material WITH them, not lecture. After all, if the first speech didn't help them understand, why would another one? I'd rather take my time, put things into context, and make sure they can identify and apply concepts than simply give them the answers without the implications. I enjoy learning, and relish the chance to impart some of that joy to others. The only downside to my history with tutoring is that I never got paid for it! I've also studied multiple fields while in college, including biology, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science, and am now studying psychology, so I consider myself pretty well-rounded for a 21-year-old. Since I've been in college, I've tutored peers (again, free of charge) in all of these fields, especially with algebra, calculus, and chemistry. Motivation: Financial reasons aside (after all, at least some motivation to complete a job involves reward), I'd like to tutor to give hope. As cheesy as that may sound, I believe that people are most motivated to succeed when they know they have a chance to do so. I'd like to work with students to help them achieve their goals, whether that be a true understanding of the material or a good grade in a hard course. The expression on someone's face when they finally understand a concept is one that brings me great joy and satisfaction. Since part of my happiness stems from helping others to be happy and I am able to learn material quickly, tutoring is a very natural fit for me.

Hobbies

Hobbies: __________ Sports—I play on an intramural team for ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and futsal (indoor soccer), as well as for fun with friends. I also enjoy the occasional game of tennis and volleyball. Music—I listen to, sing, and play music. Back in my hometown I was in band for seven years, and I grew up in a Church of Christ (strictly vocal music), so music has always been part of my life. Other—Lastly, I love to read, write, and draw. Interests: __________ Music—Like I said before, music has always been a huge part of me, and it's one of my greatest passions. I'm actually a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, an organization dedicated to the advancement of music. I typically listen to pop, instrumental, and a capella music. My favorite artists are Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix. Books/Movies—My favorite novels and movies have always been science fiction or fantasy, usually with a healthy mix of action (Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Star Wars). Counseling—Eventually, I aspire to become a counselor. I've always had a knack for empathy and advising, and I've had more than one occasion to put them to use. The human mind is fascinating to me, and this has been part of my motivation to pursue psychology, but my main goal is to help as many people as I can with the gifts I have. If I can help even one person feel good in their own skin, it's a success in my book.
